Community Action Month May 2020: A Message From Bobby Deike, Executive Director Community Council of South Central Texas, Inc.

In May of each year, Community Action Agencies across the United States celebrate Community Action Month. May of 2020 for CCSCT is even more special, as we celebrate our 55th year of serving individuals and families in need. CCSCT was founded on May 11, 1965 after President Lyndon Baines Johnson declared a, “War on Poverty,” in 1964.

Our, “Food Distribution Day,”   event this month demonstrated a community in action. The Seguin Area Community Foundation Board of Directors were working together to find ways to support this Community and reached out to offer CCSCT a donation to provide food to those in need in the Seguin area. CCSCT staff planed out this event and collaborated with the San Antonio Area Food Bank and all their volunteers to pack and load food boxes for delivery. The National Guard delivered the food to Park West here in Seguin for distribution, while Seguin PD helped to manage traffic. Several CCSCT staff along with a Seguin City Councilman and City Manager loaded food for families. This is community action at its best. Thank you to all that were involved.

Many of the Cities and Counties in CCSCT’s service area are also celebrating, by proclaiming May 2020 as Community Action Month. I want to thank all of them for recognizing CCSCT and our work in their communities.

Recently CCSCT has gained funding and support from other community sources such as; the San Antonio Area Foundation, HEB, Wells Fargo and Seguin 2nd Baptist Church. Thank you to them and the Seguin Area Community Foundation for entrusting CCSCT with this funding.

Lastly, CCSCT is awaiting the delivery of federal funding through the CARES Act designated to Community Action Agencies that operate the Community Services Block Grant and Low Income Home Energy Program for utility assistance. This funding along with some of the local funding is specifically designed to serve those individuals and families affected by COVID-19.
