CCSCT Joins Fire Prevention Week in Real County

Community Council of South Central Texas Weatherization Program assists in securing Smoke Detectors for Real County Community.

In observance of National Fire Prevention Week, Real County Judge Rubio, the Camp Wood Fire Department, State Farm, and CCSCT’s Weatherization Program partnered up to provide residents in need with smoke detectors. The detectors were secured by a State Farm Grant fulfilled by the Insurance Council of Texas.

Actively supporting local fire departments is a priority for all involved in this effort. Through State Farm’s grant to the ICT, the council was able to provide 50 smoke detectors to the Camp Wood Fire Department.  These are valuable resources needed for life-saving fire safety tools in the community.

This year’s theme for fire prevention is “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.” Installing a smoke alarm and regularly checking the batteries can go a long way towards saving lives and property. According to the National Fire Safety Association, three out of five home fire deaths result in fires where there are either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

Understanding the sounds smoke detectors make, are just as important. Remember the following safety tips to help you:

• A continuous set of three loud beeps—beep, beep, beep—means smoke or fire. Get out, call 9-1-1, and stay out.
• A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed.
• All smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years.
• Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.
• Make sure your smoke and CO alarms meet the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
