Community Council of South Central Texas Head Start Cultivates Love for Fresh Food Through Immersive Garden Project

Seguin, TX-Community Council of South Central Texas Head Start proudly announces its selection as a recipient of the 2023-2024 GroMoreGood Garden Grant. This esteemed grant, facilitated by the National Head Start Association and The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation, aims to foster green spaces enriching communities across the nation.

The partnership’s commitment to nurturing Head Start programs underscores its dedication to providing transformative gardening experiences for young children and families. Through educational curriculum, garden kits, and training initiatives, the GroMoreGood Garden Grants Initiative empowers communities to cultivate not only edible gardens but also vital green spaces, fostering holistic growth and learning.

Head Start plans to provide students with an immersive gardening experience to cultivate a love for healthy, fresh food and to teach children to grow, nurture, and harvest their own vegetables. Vegetables suitable for this project include Broccoli, Golden Acre Cabbage, Nantes Carrots, Bloomsdale Spinach, Provider Green Beans, Sweet Banana Peppers, and Irish Potatoes. A portion of the harvest will be used in Head Start Classrooms, and a portion will be shared with Head Start families and/or a local food agency.
