WIC Wellness Competition

Recently the local WIC agency participated in WIC Olympic Games, a 6 week competition filled with activities for every fitness level. We had an opening ceremony at the September staff meeting to get the WIC employees geared up for competition. We served healthy snacks and learned about the history of Olympic Games. We also hooked up the WII and worked on our hula-hoop skills, our first week’s Olympic activity. The Olympic competition started on October 7 and ended on November 18. Team captains were chosen for all 3 WIC clinics, which were responsible for motivating the team to exercise daily and to write in their exercise journal. At the end of the week each captain tallied the totals and submitted the totals to the WIC Wellness Coordinator. The coordinator then totaled all activities and submitted the total to the State. We had 100% participation. Before the Olympic Games, exercise was thought of as dull and boring. Everyone knew they should exercise, but would never make the time. During the course of the competition, employees were exercising every chance they got. Some walking in the park at lunch time, other working out in the morning or as soon as they got home from work. One employee even started walking to and from work. At the end of the 6 weeks, State awarded us with 3rd place in our division out of 25 clinics. WIC received a certificate and will be featured in our next WIC news.
